MacGyverisms

Even with the best of plans, when you set up a clinic and operating room in random locations such as a hockey arena or an abandoned fire hall, some creative improvisations may be required. These are my top four favourite hacks on the NWBC CAAT Project 2015:

  1. Custom Tables

Your neighbourhood vet clinic may have adjustable height tables, but CAAT borrows whatever tables the local volunteers can drum up. Our project supply bags contain varying lengths of PVC that the team uses to raise the table height to the appropriate level for each surgeon.

But if the table has no legs at all? No problem:

  1. Kitty ID

A little tape made it easy to treat these three cuties in the right order.

  1. Homemade Cat Crate

Pet owners improvised as well. This taped up litter box worked just fine to transport a patient.

Don’t worry - we did think to confirm that the box had air holes.

4.  Cone o’ Shame

E-collars were often not necessary for the spay/neuter operations, surprisingly, most of our patients really did ignore their incisions. Except for one dog who would Not. Stop. Licking. Anna solved the problem with an empty soda box and a little creativity.

Apparently the owner thought the dog was as cute in his cardboard cone as we did because he left still wearing it.
