Hurricane Katrina 2005
Massive Animal Relief Effort
Following the devastating hurricane that hit Louisiana in September 2005, CAAT deployed 82 volunteer Veterinarians, Technologists and Assistants over a 5 week period to aid in the massive animal relief effort.
Dogs, cats, rabbits, fish, iguanas, horses, goats and many other species -- each of them someone’s pet, best friend, or livestock -- were found emaciated, dehydrated, and very dirty.
The teams worked at several shelters and triage centers in New Orleans and surrounding areas, where they performed triage, examinations, placed IV catheters, vaccinated and dewormed animals, and assisted with bathing, feeding, walking and cleaning kennels.
The condition in which some animals were found alive is a testament to the amazing spirit and will to live of these creatures, reaffirming the value of animals in our human lives.
