A new provincial chapter of CAAT is now up and running.

The Ontario Chapter will be responsible for Animal Wellness Projects in remote areas of Eastern Canada, including Nunavut. Christine Robinson and Annette Pecak, Ontario Veterinary Technicians, accompanied the eleven member team to the Arctic Circle in July of 2007 to work in the community of Igloolik, Nunavut.

There is one animal wellness clinic being planned for the summer of 2008 to Pond Inlet on Baffin Island, Nunavut.

Ontario Chapter News

Hello Ontario Members of CAAT!

The Ontario Association of Veterinary Technicians annual conference was held in Toronto, Ontario in February of 2008. The Canadian Animal Assistance Team had a booth at the Trade Show and there was great interest and discussion at the booth throughout the entire weekend. Chris Robinson and Annette Pecak, the coordinators of the Ontario Chapter, also did a presentation on CAAT's work and on volunteering as a technician to a standing room only crowd. The technicians in attendance had the opportunity to see what some of the past projects were, hear about the work that has been done and the projects that are in the planning stages for 2008. It was a very successful weekend, having the opportunity to spend some time with other Ontario CAAT members as well as meeting new people and making new connections. A huge THANK YOU to our CAAT members that assisted with the booth -- Kim Painter, Allison McLean, Stephanie Cruise, and Courtney Felton.

CAAT's Ontario Chapter Coordinator Receives Award of Merit

The OVMA Award of Merit is designed to recognize individual who the general public feels are deserving of recognition for their practice of, or help to animal welfare or veterinary medicine. This year's recipient has accomplished both. The OVMA was proud to present the 2008 Award of Merit to Chris Robinson at the OVMA annual conference in Toronto in January 2008. Chris received this award for providing distinguished public service to the veterinary profession and animal welfare. Chris has been a veterinary technician for over 23 years. The four veterinarians who nominated Chris for this award all raved about this remarkable individual, lauding her for her commitment not only to the every day operations of a veterinary practice, but also for her dedication to animal welfare in Ontario and abroad.

Fundraiser

Evening Fundraiser! The Canadian Animal Assistance Team and Shon Carroll, award winning Elvis tribute artist is hosting an evening of legends to raise funds on April 5, 2008. It will be held at the Polish Legion Hall, 601 Wellington Street North, Kitchener, Ontario. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Entertainment begins at 8:00 pm. Evening buffet, licensed, 50/50 draw, door prizes. Tickets are $20 and are available in advance by calling the Ontario Chapter at (519) 623-2070, or by e-mailing caat.ontario@gmail.com. Tickets also available at the door. Funds raised are to assist CAAT's efforts in remote northern Canadian communities, primarily Nunavut. Help us help the animals!

Aeroplan Donation Drive

The Ontario Chapter will be holding a donation drive for Aeroplan miles during the months of April and May. Please download and mail in the Aeroplan pledge form (PDF). You can then make copies of the pledge form and give them out to family, friends, neighbours, coworkers, etc or you can e-mail the forms also. The more Aeroplan miles that are donated, the less expensive the flights to our 2008 Nunavut projects will be.

July Animal Wellness Project

We are still working out the details but we are going to be doing an animal wellness clinic (spay / neuter / vaccinations / deworming) in Pond Inlet, on the northern tip of Baffin Island this summer. We are hoping for the 2nd or 3rd weeks of July and should know the exact dates within the next month. We are going to be choosing the team soon so anyone interested in being a part of the Pond Inlet Team should e-mail us at caat.ontario@gmail.com ASAP. Anyone that is chosen will need to be prepared to start doing personal fundraising for their airfare (approximately $1,000). Accommodations and meals are covered. A deposit of $250 will be required once you are chosen to be on the team.
